English using songs
English
songs are regarded as a unique pedagogical tool. It is acknowledged that
learning through songs is more effective and enjoyable as song lyrics contain
rich linguistic and cultural knowledge. The objective of the study is to
investigate how song-related- activities increase students’ interest to
improve their vocabulary and knowledge on the issues raised in the song and eventually leading
to positive learning outcomes. This framework focuses on meaningful tasks which
can engage students in real communication that requires information sharing,
negotiation of meaning, and interaction.
When
English songs are used in the classes, lecturers can conduct them as a cohesive
whole, consisting of several related tasks - listening, speaking, reading,
writing and presentation. The design of the framework is divided into two
sections: guided and independent learning. The impact of the study is students
will acquire knowledge, language skills, develop their creative and critical
thinking skills through the activity-based learning method.
Thus
this framework demonstrates a holistic approach to teaching and learning the
English language. The study involved a cycle of 3 observed research lessons. In
conclusion, this framework is hoped to help other lecturers to see the value of
songs and effectively integrate it into their own classrooms.
