PROBLEM STATEMENT






One of the factors that deter the students in learning the language is the teaching methods applied in the classroom itself. An interesting lesson is a prerequisite in grasping the students’ attention towards the lesson so that optimal learning could take place. Of course there are various methods that teachers can create to spur students’ interest towards learning. Among the most popular ones is the use of realia, which could easily allow the students to relate to the everyday life. Realia can come in various forms from daily items which the students can find around the house to the music that they listen to.

In this study, the researchers decided to use songs in the classroom to increase students’ interest towards learning the language. The students not only will learn new vocabulary through the songs but also the content based on the message delivered through the songs. In other words, the songs will be a platform that will trigger the students mind to think about the issues or the message portrayed through the songs. Since the songs served as a platform for the teaching and learning to take place, the lesson could be developed further through activity-based-learning to assist the development of various language skills.
